Pebbles (excerpts)
By Yang Jifu
Translated by Göran D. Malmqvist

10. Here is shade, here I shall rest.

On the bamboo pole before me women’s clothes move in the slight breeze.

11. Again I shall live in this room.

I place the chairs where they once stood—

shall my life be what it was?

18. That black dog who runs so slowly over there,

      isn’t it ours?

Just as I’m about to call him

I remember that I am far from home
